The region is renowned as one of Southern Africa's best fly fishing destinations. Original strains of Trout can be traced back to stockings done by the famous Sir Percy Fitzpatrick of Jock of the Bushveld fame. Other stockings were done by Sir John Buchan the founding Governor of Canada. The Haenertsburg Trout Association is reputed to be the oldest fly fishing club in South Africa and one of the oldest in the Southern Hemisphere, the association manages and protects large stretches of water from Streams to Stillwater's. The association stocks these waters and fishing can be arranged through the hotel and the local fishing shop in Haenertsburg. Guiding is available for fly fisherman wishing to float tube down one of the many rivers in the region.
The Ebenezer dam is home to Rainbow Trout, Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass, Golden Carp, Kurper and Barbel. Since the banks are steep and rocky, you are more likely to catch more fish by boat. Please note: there are launching fees. The best fishing months are May to July.
With only a few smallmouth bass caught each year, this dam dominantly accommodates a large number of largemouth bass. The fish weigh up to 4kg.
The following lures are recommended: dead ringer worms, brush hogs, Texas rigged flukes and spinner baits. Bank angling is allowed in unrestricted areas. Keep an eye out for the crocodiles and hippos.
